Out of the Slums and Into the Schools

We wanted to give you all some more information about the kids at the school. Most of us aren’t really used to the idea that some kids are orphans. Nor do we have much of an idea about the lives of underprivileged children. All the children in the schools where we’re teaching everyday are from the slum in Kolkata. They have close to nothing. Most of the children in these schools are orphans who have been cast out by parents or a mother who could not care for them. Some of the lucky ones have some form of a guardian but most of them sleep under the open sky. 

Nick went and spoke to some people in the slum today and it’s quite common for there to be 10 people living in one very small room together. Nick was told that 85% of India’s billion-plus population live in impoverished conditions. From observation, every night outside the window of our room where we’re staying there are at least 10 people sleeping on the street. This is just outside our window and says nothing of the number of people who sleep on the street in Kolkata. 

We’re working on a way to give you some more insight to the kids and their world. We’re pretty busy teaching when we’re there but will do our best. Feel free to send us questions about the kids and we will do our best to answer them.
