About the Orphanage

Things are rolling along here. We wanted to get to some more of your questions. Many of you have asked things like “where do the kids live?” “what do they eat?” etc. Which of course brings us to the obvious question, “What about the Orphanage? How’s it going?”.
Well a lot of our time has been spent teaching in the schools. Mohammad has set-up four schools in the Kolkata slums for these largely orphaned kids. When we have not been teaching we have been working on the Orphanage project.
There have been a lot of preliminary steps and planning to do before we could even start raising funds for the orphanage, but we’re very close! So many of you have been eager to help, volunteer and donate. It is all needed. The official website will be up soon, which will enable you to help. We will of course provide a link to that for you all.
Our goal is that by the time we have left Kolkata, the Orphanage has all the necessary funds it needs in order to purchase the remainder of the land, and of course building supplies and labor. The Orphanage is vital because as we have mentioned many of the children just sleep out under the stars. The school will often provide their only one meal for the day, and their only chance for an education and ability to grow. Otherwise they would grow up on the streets like in Slum Dog Millionaire, and have no real opportunity for a fulfilled life.
Conditions here are the worst of the worst, its been just a continual amazement to both of us that there have been such magical moments, and bright smiling faces in amongst everything else. We’re trained Volunteer Ministers and all the work we’re doing out here is because something actually can be done about it.

Inside teaching at the school…

Erin explains how it all goes down… Some of the students you see in this video are our regulars, they are wonderful kids ranging from 3-15. The boy in the video is about 8 and is also a really talented drawer. The girl is about thirteen and is really fond of Erin and her fashion taste, she has a great way of communicating despite the language barrier, always eager to show Erin her school work. Quite a lot of them don’t know hold old they are and so neither do we! They are so great, so eager to learn and really smart. They of course know a lot more in Hindi and Bengali, their native languages, but we are teaching them English. This is something we do everyday with them, English and Mathematics.
Everyday after school, we see this girl run straight back to the slum where she lives and, one, two, three, four, five times we see her come back and forth filling up and carrying containers of water from the small water pump right by our school back to wherever she is staying. And she’ll continue to do this till after we’ve left for the day… it’s touching and heartbreaking at the same time.
